Hellships

The coloring of these educational comic history stories was a remarkable assignment for it had to have both a tropical and a vintage feel. The stories are about the so-called ‘Hellships’.
In 1944, the Japanese transported Allied Prisoners of War to use them for slave labor in the construction of airports and railroads for their war machine.

Hardly anything is known about what the men experienced on these ships, but many men died due to the poor conditions . The graphic stories in this book gave some of these men an identity. This particular one was drawn by Jan Cleijne.
